Course Motivation
In this course, we will work to define personality and how it develops. With that, you also will learn about the various theories in personality development, stages of development, personality traits, and moral development. You also will learn about different types of personalities and use some tools to help determine yours.
This course also includes learning about some of the most popular researchers of personality, making personality changes, personality disorders, how personality matters in your career, and personal growth.
By the time you complete this course, you should have a well-rounded foundation of personality development and be ready to put it into use, for either personal or professional matters.
Because personalities are so much a part of our lives, it is fascinating to study them. The more you know about personality development, the better you are able to understand why someone may be the way she or he is or why you do some of the things you do.
There is a branch of psychology that focuses only on studying personality. It is referred to as "personality psychology," and there are people who have careers in this field. Personality psychologists understand human behavior, conduct research, and work in a wide variety of government, nonprofit, and corporate settings.
Why Does Personality Development Matter?
You now have an idea of what personality is. But why is it important to study it? There are many reasons, including that the more you know about personality development, the more you know about yourself and those around you and the better able you are to work with others.
For example, if there is something about a co-worker's personality that irks you, it can be beneficial to understand personality development so you know how the person may have gotten that way. Perhaps there are things about your own personality that puzzle you and cause you to wonder why you are that way.
Understanding personality development can help shed light on you or those around you, especially when it comes to issues such as:
- trust;
- honesty;
- openness;
- agreeableness;
- extroversion;
- conscientiousness.
It can even help give you a better understanding about someone's individual traits that involve organization skills and punctuality, sensitivity level, efficiency, curiosity, and so much more.
Personality development matters because in our lives we deal with many people, while in homes, on the job, and out in the public. The more you know and understand the topic, the more you are able to use that to your benefit in understanding yourself and those around you. This can help you with both personal and professional relationships.
We Are All Unique
Identical twins share the same genetic make-up. If raised together, they may share the same nurture. That does not mean identical twins definitely will share the same personality traits, however. It may make it more probable, but each will have his or her own experiences that help shape personality development. Interestingly, identical twins who have been raised apart may share some traits in common but also will likely have personality traits that differ as a result of their nurturing and experiences over time.
Identical twins aside, we all have unique personalities. We were born with our own set of genes, and the nurturing we received growing up played an important role in helping to develop who we are as adults. Even though some people may share some personality traits, they are still unique and do not have the same personality as someone else.
Unless you have an identical twin who had the same nurturing during childhood, take pride in knowing you are unique!
