Introduction to Journalism: Short Course (3 days full-time)

A daytime introductory course for those interested in starting in journalism. Students will cover all the basics of the profession in the company of Tony Padman, an experienced journalist in both the local and national press who has recently specialised in celebrity interviews and freelance writing.

Day 1:

Introduction

News writing, how news is constructed, ownership and structure of the industry, quotes/the intro/facts/pictures and angles
Day 2:

Ideas

What is a good idea - how to find them and what to do with them, research, interviews and body language, features.
Day 3:

Professionalism

The interview, selling your ideas, dealing with editors, the law and libel, maintaining the quality, marketing your work, deadlines.

Assignments: Students will work on news reports, features, and interviews during the course.
