Introduction to Media Law:

Short Course (2 days full-time)

An intensive two-day course offering a comprehensive introduction to media law. Designed for working journalists and those contemplating a career as staff or freelance writers in any sector of the industry, especially those in newspapers, magazines, web publishing and broadcast.

Day 1:
Introduction, rights and restrictions. Crime and the courts, contempt, children and young people, sex offences. Libel risks. Libel defences.
Day 2:
Freedom of Information, privacy. Breach of confidence, copyright. Codes of conduct, ethical dilemmas. Conclusions.

Assignments: Students will be expected to undertake background reading and short practical exercises in preparation for the course.

Books: McNae's Essential Law for Journalists and Media Law course notes (London School of Journalism). Cost included in course fees.
